How To Avoid Dry Hits

We’ve all been there. You go to take a hit of your favourite e-liquid in your prized device and you get nothing but pain, a nasty burnt taste and a ruined coil. Dry hits are the worst. But don’t worry! We’re here to help.

Check out this short blog to find out what causes dry hits and how to avoid them.

What is a Dry Hit?

This is when the cotton in your device is not saturated with liquid. This can be due to your coil not being wicked correctly, having an empty tank or running the wattage on your device too high. Read on to learn what causes a dry hit, and how you can sort it!

Lack of Liquid

If you have a conventional glass tank and pre-made coil, you may get dry hits because you do not have enough e-liquid in your tank. Look closely at the glass on your tank for a minimum fill line. If the liquid goes below this line then your coil will not be saturated. If your tank doesn’t have a minimum fill line, just make sure that the visible, white cotton parts of your coil are covered by the liquid. If you have an RDA, make sure you are dripping liquid onto your cotton regularly enough to keep it wet to avoid dry hits.

Another reason for dry hits could be that you are running the wattage on your device too high for your coil. Most pre-made, sub ohm tank coils have a recommendation for wattage range on the side. If you have the wattage set too high, your coil can’t keep up with the amount of liquid needed to keep your cotton saturated.

PG/VG Ratio

You may also encounter dry hits when using a high VG liquid as it has a thicker consistency and doesn’t absorb in the same way as a 50/50 or high PG liquid does. If you are using a standard sub ohm tank coil and the holes that let liquid through to the cotton are too small, a higher PG ratio e-liquid may work better.

If you use an RDA, you will know that you need to add your own wicking material to your coils. If you have had the same cotton for a long period of time, you may find that you get dry hits. This is due to sweeteners building up over time, which stops the cotton from absorbing liquid like it should. If you notice that you aren’t getting much flavour from your liquid, this may be the case and you should consider re-wicking before you start getting dry hits.
